DIY Pop Up Flash diffuser
On camera pop up flashes usually produce some not so fantastic results. However, faced with the possibility of having a flash versus not using the flash, there are times when having that extra fill of light makes the difference between a keeper and a throw away image. I came up with a neat way for a DIY pop up flash diffuser. Basically, you can either use a clear film canister or clear pill bottle and carefully cut open a side so it just fits over the pop up flash. In a pinch, I’ve also used one of those packages that holds AA batteries and placed that over the pop up flash. Yes, sometimes you have to use a little bit of tape or a rubber band to keep things in place. I think you get the idea.

It may look a little funky on the camera but I’m telling you, it does the job.
I had my popup flash diffuser which worked wonders but it did not quite have the reach or power that I needed in certain situations. For instance, I was called to shoot a high school wrestling event. I was told that I would be allowed to shoot flash and it was highly recommended because the gym was dimly lit. I had a few issues.
I did not want any harsh shadows or hotspots on the wrestlers faces
I needed the reach to be able to shoot 10 to 15 feet
My current setup did not allow me to shoot diffused flash at that distance
Yes, I sorta had a dilemma. This was a paying gig so I had one chance to do this and one chance to get it right. I had the right camera, the right lenses, and a couple of off camera (on hotshoe) flashes to choose from but I needed a flash diffuser. I called up a local photographer and he had a couple of recommendations. One involved a DIY flash diffuser that he said would take me a half hour or so to put together once I had the right materials. Otherwise he highly recommended that I run out and buy one of two items. One is a Sto-Fen Flash Diffuser which comes in different sizes depending on the type of flash that you have. The other is the Gary Fong LightSphere Collapsible Diffuser. For whatever reason I initially had an issue in finding the right Sto-Fen Flash Diffuser for my flash, so I opted to go with the Lightsphere Collapsible Diffuser. At a later point, I know I made the right decision and these are the videos that caught my attention:

I understand that some folks may want a cheaper alternative. As any good photographer, I wanted a backup just in case. Eventually I went out and found a Sto-Fen for my Vivitar 285HV. It seems that now they sell the flash, Sto-Fen, and some other goodies together in one kit.
I put it in my head that I would put together the do it yourself flash diffuser when I had the time but for now I wanted to make sure that I had right equipment on hand and had no excuses for not doing the very best that I can at this wrestling tournament.
End result: All went well. I did learn something though. If you happen to attend a wedding and watch the photographer taking pictures with his/her flash, you’ll often notice that the good photographers will use a bracket to get the flash both up and away from the camera lens. The lessens the chance of getting redeye in the pictures and with the combination of the bracket and flash diffuser, you get the best possible images that you are able to take as a photographer.
I was on my way to find the best flash diffuser for my current SLR setup. Reason being, my wife needed pictures of her model horses and the great looking saddles that she made but all I could show her were images with harsh flash. Yes, I knew that there were a variety of options to choose from, including a flash diffuser for my popup flash, strobe flash, and when I choose to shoot in direct lighting.
